With nearly a year gone since Fukushima, I took a look at one possible alternative for nuclear fuel called thorium. Proponents haven’t had much luck getting either private industry or the U.S. labs to build a thorium reactor, but they’re hoping for some help from Congress to get it off the ground. Here’s my report in this Tuesday’s Washington Post.

James: Thanks for your post. I agree that thorium advocates probably are overstating their case, but I’m not sure I would agree with an anti-nuclear advocate quoted in the article that thorium is just a distraction. Given the problems of existing nuclear technology, thorium seems like a possible alternative. Although U.S. industry doesn’t seem interested, India and China are giving it a go. Let’s see how it works before calling it a failure.
